The Sleeping Gypsy by Henri Rousseau - Canvas Art Print

About Henri Rousseau’s The Sleeping Gypsy

Want to decorate your space with the Sleeping Gypsy print?

Henri Rousseau painted this masterpiece in 1897.

The work depicts a woman gypsy mandolin player in the desert as she sleeps in the moonlight. There is a lion next to her smelling her but does not harm her.

Although there is danger, the woman is still able to fall asleep and have a pleasant dream as we can see from the branch in her arms and the smile on her face.

The artist might be expressing that we can make the best out of a bad situation and that the worst might not happen.

The painting in present day is at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City.

Beautiful print, but the dark areas are far too dark. Much darker than the actual painting (which I just saw at MoMA. The face of the man is barely visible. Still, it’s a keeper.

I had a copy of this at home when I was growing up. This Giclee print is much more vivid. It makes me wish I had more wallspace.
